The Skinny: Brady Tkachuk

Since Brady Tkachuk was NEVER going to re-sign with a small-market Canadian club, he was destined to become a villain in the eyes of Senators fans.

The U.S. Olympian took it 10 steps further by green-lighting (read: forcing) a trade to the league’s preeminent bullies: the Florida Panthers. On a team with such championship pedigree and aspirations, the winger needs to embrace the hate in a hurry. The good news is his skill set should fit right in (whether they would have benefited more from a contrasting rather than complementary star is a whole other kettle of fish).

Truth be told, Brady deserves the power forward label everyone assigns to his older brother. He’s bigger (6’4”, 226 lbs vs. 6’2”, 202 lbs), faster and more consistently punishing than the playmaking agitator:

In addition to sharing the Panthers’ ornery attitude, the 26-year-old should feel a sense of tactical familiarity in Sunrise. Both Florida and Ottawa succeed largely on the strength of their smothering 1-2-2 forecheck.

This is where—much like with Sam Bennett—the threat of his physicality may trump the collisions themselves. As a swifter big-bodied winger than his brother, he’s suited to a first-man-in role within Paul Maurice’s scheme. He possesses the tools to close the distance and either run defenders through the end boards or simply drive them into his support’s waiting arms. D-men will not be eager to retrieve pucks with a freight-train F1 breathing down their neck. Lane Hutson (MTL 48) certainly wasn’t:

Oddly enough, Matthew’s miserable skating should elevate the trio’s puck pursuit…by slotting Brady in as the primary F1. Big bro thrives as a stationary link-up artist. Due to the nature of his position, Bennett bears the heaviest three-zone burden. That casts the newcomer as their main puck hound.

He can reach his spot way sooner than Matthew and should thus provide the Panthers with more contested retrievals, recoveries, etc.

Moreover, having a slower partner in crime will restrict his read-and-react weaknesses. Next to faster linemates in Ottawa, he sometimes blew containment as F2 in search of offense after being beaten up the ice. Limiting the time he spends in that role will minimize each member’s faults while maximizing their strengths (Brady’s physical dimension + Matthew’s IQ).

Once Florida settles into the OZ, Tkachuk’s foremost similarity to his brother emerges: quick-strike passing. For better or worse, Keith’s sons don’t let their decisions marinate. They go straight for the jugular:

You may not think of him as a one-touch playmaker, but the puck is on his stick, off his stick and in the slot before many defenses can gather their bearings. He’s particularly clever at uncovering lanes from below the goal line, which means his tendencies move in lockstep with Florida’s offensive tempo and preferred zones of attack.

Assuming the team deploys a Tkachuk-Bennett-Tkachuk second unit—I’d be shocked to see a different configuration on opening night—the Panthers’ 2C should receive the best instant-offense service of his career.

To make matters worse for the opposition, Brady’s efforts below the dots extend far beyond his passing:

As seen in the clips above (all from a single mid-March game vs. the Habs), he ranks among the most imposing puck-protectors in the league. While his size helps, of course, his keep-away instincts are superb. He boasts a well-tuned clock for contact initiation and takes the form of a low-and-wide boulder on impact. He combines that heft with a suddenness and uncanny grasp of leverage, not only recognizing his escape routes but also bringing sufficient explosiveness out of his stops to correct course when he chooses the wrong path. He’s somehow immovable AND elusive in tight quarters—and he can center pucks with his back turned to the play on a dime if you throw low doubles at him.

The second line already featured a savvy setup man and thumper. Now it has a jumbo play-extender who dictates the terms the moment he grabs possession in his office. The trio should therefore generate longer OZ touches, eroding the defense’s will one demoralizing wall engagement at a time.

Oh yeah, there’s also that whole net-front thing:

Tkachuk wins inside position around home plate more often than not. He favors redirections and tap-ins over traffic and orients himself accordingly, posting up in the goaltender’s sight line and then swiveling off to the side in anticipation of a feed. Coaches wouldn’t mind a more persistent screen game, but when there’s a loose puck near the blue ice, it’s difficult to muzzle him.

In the clip above, watch him creep off the boards to invite contact, knock 6’3”, 218-pound Dakota Joshua off course and spin free onto the doorstep.

The advantages of his proactive physicality are apparent down low. There’s a surprising measure of fluidity in his actions too, as he doesn’t need to pause for a reset after his duels. Each motion chains into the next. That’s why he’s first in line for touches in a quadrant that should be crawling with defenders.

Unfortunately, whether it’s in the goaltender’s grill or higher in the slot, Brady’s career conversion rate fails to match his sound process. His poise and pre-release maneuvers upgrade good touches into great ones. He gets goaltenders moving laterally whenever possible. He times his back-door cuts intelligently. He’s a stubborn net-front threat in cycle scenarios. You could argue that he does everything right except finish at an above-average clip:

There is one caveat to consider: He’s spent his entire career in Ottawa. Playing with a distributor of Matthew’s caliber (6th leaguewide in primary assist rate over the past 3 seasons) is very different from taking the ice with Tim Stützle (86th), Dylan Cozens (122nd) or Drake Batherson (41st). The older Tkachuk excels at one-touch and goal-line dishes. The sort of blinding connections that catch goaltenders unaware and demand less from a shooting POV.

Although Brady won’t transform into a sniper overnight, his brother’s passing and Florida’s superior volume from the point should shrink the gap between his expected and actual numbers.

At least 5-on-5.

Matthew (goal line) and Sam Reinhart (bumper) are prodigious down low on the PP, and I’m not convinced Tkachuk should occupy PP1’s left flanker role currently held by Carter Verhaeghe. That station requires the kind of medium-range marksmanship he’s yet to demonstrate. Still, you can bank on ~25 EV goals and perhaps a more balanced Matthew via dizzying back-and-forth slot passes.

So far, this change of scenery appears seamless on paper. Are there any concerns? A minor one: His defensive metrics may have flattered his actual contributions, as Travis Green has built an outstanding three-zone structure in Ottawa. Tkachuk himself is a middling defender who suffers from lapses in judgment:

As noted earlier, he’s not as disciplined as you’d like on the forecheck. Drifting below his counterpart gifted opponents easy jailbreak rushes. And he won’t always be F1. He was also a tad slow in processing his assignment within Green’s zone scheme. His late DZ reads supplied teams with an extra beat to gain downhill velocity, occasionally pulling the defense into vulnerable shapes.

These issues are notable but not as grave as they seem at first blush because Florida runs a hybrid system (zone below the circles —> man up top). When the puck travels low-high—previously a troublesome scenario for Tkachuk—he won’t have to worry about making split-second coverage decisions vs. three-high or scissor action.

Just stay with your man.

Therein lies the beauty of the Panthers’ latest home-run swing. Sure, the Bash Brothers narrative is fun. Every team would covet a legit top-six power forward. Yet as is always the case with GM Bill Zito, it’s a studied scheme fit as well (see: Seth Jones). Maurice’s principles and Zito’s personnel should sharpen Tkachuk’s tools and sand down his blemishes. For that reason, along with Aleksander Barkov’s health and some much-needed rest following three straight Stanley Cup Finals, the Eastern Conference’s bad guys enter 2026-27 as the most vaunted non-playoff team in recent memory.
